waiting on a data run, sorta trying to pay attention in class. It's not holding my interest. Granted, I'm half-asleep too.
I like Brian, and he's doing his best, and he took a lot of time to help me out on Friday, and I owe him.
It's the other instructor I'm not so fond of.
You've seen me mention Glushko around. I'm pretty annoyed with him. Because it's obvious he plays favourites. And it's obvious that I'm not one of his favourites. He can't even manage to acknowledge that I exist. I first noticed this last Thursday at Parker's attempt at disproving that there's no such thing as a free lunch. (He rolled out the barbecue and grilled food left over from Cal Day.)
Well, Glushko was there. He smoozes with students. And he repeatedly pulled people aside to talk to them. But when I attempted to get into a general conversation he was holding with somebody else, he proceeded to ignore anything I said. And so I've been watching and seeing him in the labs, and he'll go talk to other students, but he's not said a word to me. Not a single word. Not even 'hi'. Grr. It really bothers me and something needs to be done.
So...what do I do now? does anybody have any advice? How do I let him know that he's not being fair?
Then again, I'm not a true disciple of the XML way, so there's probably no hope for me.

Date: 2003-04-29 02:49 pm (UTC)Is this *Bob* Glushko you're talking about?
I've been doing structured markup stuff for 15+ years now, and am guessing that this is the same Glushko I've been running into at conferences and working with clients throughout this time. And if it is, I'm not sure that there's much you can do ... since the behavior you report is what I've heard and observed in multiple situations. He goes blank on seeing certain people. Just blank -- you're not there, you're not talking, you don't really exist. What I've seen change that behavior (at least briefly) is if you're in a situation where somebody he respects is *already* talking with you (referring to you), etc. *Then* he may (at least briefly) recognize that you exist, but the stickiness of that recognition can be transient, too.
Beyond that, I'm not convinced that "fair" is part of his vocabulary.

Date: 2003-04-29 02:54 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, I've got that going, and I'm in his *class*. :P
Well, I know to avoid him for future classes and I'll just try to get things done and deal with it. At least Brian (who is co-teacher in one of the classes) *is* fair, and has done a heck of a lot to help me out.
As I said, I'm not a disciple of the One True Way of XML (it's a handy tool, but just that), and he is, of course, the prophet. :P
Thanks, anyway. At least I know there's not much that I can do.
