Despite being in Florida, I was able to listen to much of the 4th quarter. Hearing Starkey call the final play was sadly classic Starkey; "He's gotta throw the ball away! He's gotta throw the ball away! I don't beleive it! He's NOT throwing the ball away!"

That's what I don't get..I was watching and wondering why he was trying to scramble when he had absolutely no room..in that case, why not keep in 2 tight ends to protect against a sack, keep the running back in the pocket to pass protect as well, have the wideouts run patterns into the end zone, and if someone gets open, great, throw the touchdown pass..if not, throw it out of the back of the end zone, kick the field goal, and go to OT. I know, it's easy to play armchair quarterback, but that was one of the more bizarre endings to a game I've seen.

Freshman quarterback, first start.

He just got caught up in the moment and forgot that the clock wasn't his friend.

Poor kid, though. I wouldn't want to be him next week.

Indeed..and I could see Jimmy Clausen doing something similar, but that's why they're freshmen..without a junior in Sharpley to step in today, it would have been a total blowout; I expect Sharpley to play against USC next week in what could actually be a competitive game for ND, which would have been unthinkable a few weeks ago.

Yeah. Our normal starting quarterback (Nate Longshore) was held out because of a sprained ankle he sustained at Oregon. So the freshman got the start. We shouldn't have been in that situation in the first place, but he was doing pretty good until he got caught in the moment. Argh.

As I said, typical Cal. I just had hoped that this season would have been the season the inches and the bounces started to go our way. It sure looked that way in the Oregon game...

And now Boston College, of all teams, is probably #2 in the country.

I don't think they'll stay there.

But argh. I would have loved to be number one for just one week...
