So what does a good Cal fan do when Stanford pulls a Luke Skywalker and takes out the Death Star *cough* USC?
Cheer them on, of course. Tonight, one night only, I'm swallowing my hatred of our arch-rivals and saying, "Damn! Backup quarterback, USC's house, and you manage to take them down? Way to go, Jim Harbaugh. Way to go, Cardinal. You *rock*."
If Florida had managed to seal the deal against LSU, I'd probably be waking up tomorrow to find Cal in a place I honestly never would have ever in a million years expected them -- Number One. But LSU came back, so it's probable Cal will be number two (although Ohio State could leapfrog us). And we owe a large chunk of it to Stanford.
It's a funny position to be in, but hey, for one night only, I'll like red. Go Cardinal. :)

Re: Better Dead Than Red
Date: 2007-10-07 07:30 pm (UTC)It's like this. One season, the Gophers are really good. They've been pretty good for five years running, but this year, they're really really good, and the whispers are that they might finally get back to the Rose Bowl. (I think your Rose Bowl drought is shorter than ours, but not by much.)
In the meantime, Wiscy's gone into a spiral, until finally, last year, they had one victory, and that was sorta a fluke against Northwestern. They've got a new coach, and he's a bit combative, but Wiscy's still suffering from several years of horrendous coaching, and nobody expects them to do much this year.
So now, Minnesota's really good, but unfortunately, during these last five years that they've been this way, Michigan (it was either them or Ohio State, I'm not familiar enough with Big-10 football to know if you have a lesser rivalry with either.) has been the best team in college football. Over the last four years, they've only had four losses, and have been in the national title picture for several years. And to get to the rose bowl, you have to beat Michigan, and other than a fluke victory four years ago, you haven't managed it yet.
In the meantime, Wiscy's so sucky that the rivalry, while still there, isn't much fun. It's nice to have the Axe (and isn't it funny that the symbol of both our rivalry games is an axe?) back where it belongs, but rivalry games aren't totally supposed to be about beating up on a hapless rival.
So biggest season ever, your team's ranked #3, but damn Michigan is #1/#2 depending on what poll you look at, and the November game when Michigan comes to Minnesota's house is shaping up to not only be for the Rose Bowl, but for the National Championship. And while the Rose Bowl is what it's all about, there's still something to be said for playing for all the marbles in college football.
So anyway, Michigan looked a bit shaky against Northwestern last week, which is why the split, and Wiscy's supposed to go to the Big House and play them the next week. And nobody gives Wiscy a chance. It's Michigan, the juggernaut of college football, against a team that went 1-11 last year and, while having one victory to their name this year, might not see another one all season? It's a friggen joke. To make things even more impossible, Wiscy's starting quarterback is suddenly out.
And then Wiscy goes in the Big House and hands Michigan its first home loss in five years, clearing Minnesota's way to winning the conference and going to the Rose Bowl or the NC, if they can keep winning.
As I said, the stars aligned just right. Next week, I'll be back to hating red and the Furd, but I think this weekend, I'm okay with actually sorta kinda admitting that this weekend was definitely a Go Cardinal weekend.
