The trick is finding a client that will talk Jabber. I use Trillian Pro on my laptop, but that costs money, and I think you're a Mac user anyway. I hear rumors that ichat supports Jabber on the Mac side, though.

Also, Google Talk is a Jabber implementation as well, so if you have a gmail address, you can use that. Right now, Google folk can't talk to LJ folk easily, but that'll change as the LJ folk get their network running a bit better.

Anyway, it's pretty easy to set up under Trillian. I think they've got the Jabber plugin already installed and you just have to enter the account with it. The LJ one was easy to set up there, Google took a little more work (although there's an instruction page there too...)
