What would it take to rise that much?

(And can you post this to [livejournal.com profile] geographile? - separate from reference to your own family if you prefer, either way's fine.)

If it rises 14 meters my house would be under water. A lot of water.

Current estimates are (at current rates of rise and conditions for further warming) a rise of about 30 cm by the end of this century.

I've been living here for a long time, and flood fear seems to be 'fear-chic'. 14m is pretty high.

In any case, Sacramento would still exist, it would just have the word "Bay" after it. :)

Not as much as you'd think - don't think in terms of icecaps melting, think in terms of thermal expansion of seawater.

(I'm dutch. A significant portion of my country lies UNDER sea level. Of course I'm aware of situations like this.)
