I'm utterly curious.

What is your favourite word in the English language, and why?

(Yeah, I'm up to something. Feel free to direct others here if you wish.)

Antidisestablishmentarianism. For obvious reasons. ;)

Defenestration is my favorite word in any language, just because of its definition and existance. ;)

If it didn't sound so odd, I think "crepuscular" would be my favorite word. It means of the twilight. But I don't like the 'pus' part, so saying it or actually writing it out makes me feel slightly odd.

At the moment I really like 'elide.' It means to smooth over something; it's used in poetry when you combine two syllables together on a vowel sound.

And I've always been fond of parapetetic...

Darnit. I'll have to give this more thought if I'm just going to give you one answer. ;)

I have always liked the word "people" ever since my first grade teacher taught me how to spell it correctly. "Pee-oh-pell-ee"

I also like the word "skin." Simple, to the point.

Mellifluous.

Oh, you want to know why? Well, "mellifluous" rolls off the tounge like its own self--it's a mellifluous sound. And mellifluous sounds are wonderful thing. "Melodius" nearly won, but more sounds can be mellifluous than really have melody.

And I have never been able to spell tongue right on the first try...

Puddle

or...

Duck

They're both awesome words. :)

Oh! Forgot the "why" bit:

Because they're fun to say and evoke very positive feelings.

And plus "duck" rhymes with "fuck" :P

obfuscation because it mocks itself. It's something along the lines of making things unnecessarily difficult....like using a really big word for "making things confusing."

Indubitably... Simply because it's so much fun to say.

It just sounds like it is, and it's nice.

The funny thing is that I've thought about this in French (choisir, because it's fun to say) ... but I haven't really thought about it in English.

My favorite words tend not to be "real words," now that I think about it.

How about "burninate"? It's the etymological source for a variety of fun made-up words. :)

because that is the most precious thing we have. It's what keeps us alive and motivates us.
