all of this for what?
Dec. 6th, 2004 10:34 amYou see? Bear fans don't believe in fairy tales. 'Cause if this had been a fairy tale, we'd be in the Rose Bowl right now, not playing the fourth place team in the Big 12 in the Holiday Bowl. We've really got to find better bowl matchups. Hey Pac-10! Do something about this!
Yeah, I did a lot of crying and moping over Cal football yesterday, and I don't think it's over. 'Cause it still hurts. Funny. 10-1 season, and I'm disappointed. Go figure.
And you sit here thinking about might have beens and wonder if Tedford had shot for the end zone instead of taking a knee at the end of the SoMiss game, if that would have been enough to get Cal in the rose bowl, and you wonder if that's what it takes, do you want to root for a team that does those sorts of things? And when the BCS was supposed to take MOV out of the equation...why did it come down to one game that we had to blow the team out to go? *sigh*
Yeah. I'll stop being bitter. Just that this is typical Cal fan anguish -- fairy tale endings don't happen to the Bears. Not anymore. We used up all our fairy tale endings in 1982.

Date: 2004-12-06 07:27 pm (UTC)Welcome to the BCS! Where the Haves™ get the benefit of the doubt, and the Have Nots™ have no shot, no matter what they do. Being in a power conference means nothing if you're not among the certain 2 or 3 schools everyone likes from those conferences every year.
Nothing you could have done in the So. Miss game owuld have made a difference. Why? Because Texas is Texas. And Cal's not. Believe me, as a Michigan State fan I understand. MSU could go undefeated INCLUDING beating UM, UM could lose 2 games, and UM would still get the better bowl bid if neither could go to the Rose Bowl. Pollsters don't vote on the best team, they vote on tradition, then they vote on performance. So you could have dumped So. Miss 62-0 and you'd probably have still been out in the cold.
One thing they can do to fix this is eliminate the preseason polls altogether. Then you don't end up with really, really good teams having to fight their way up from 25th or something and thus never able to crack the Top 5 because the pollsters can't justify bumping someone down from there.
Now... that being said. HOLY CRAP that Holiday Bowl game will be good. Texas Tech? Wow. That's going to be 2 nutty offenses going at it. Someone could pass for 450 yards, 5 TD's, and lose.

You're dissapointed?
