So *that's* what was going on outside South Hall last night:

BERKELEY -- A UC Berkeley professor was killed on campus Monday afternoon after being run over by a delivery truck.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office was not releasing the professor's name late Monday night pending notification of family members. The UC Berkeley Police Department declined to comment.

According to the Alameda County Coroner's Office, a call came in around 4:25 p.m. that a man had been struck by a truck that had driven on campus to make a delivery. No further details were available late Monday.

Central campus is treacherous between all the delivery trucks and people walking. You've really got to keep your eyes open. Damn, though...wonder who it was...

[UPDATE 10:49 AM: Got this in email

(Berkeley-Metro) -- UC Berkeley history professor Reginald Zelnick is dead after being hit by delivery truck on campus yesterday afternoon. Zelnick was an expert on Berkeley's Free Speech Movement in
the 1960s that changed campuses around the country and propelled the university into the forefront of the anti-Vietnam war movement. He taught recent European history, Zelnick just celebrated his 68th birthday ten days ago. He co-edited a collection of essays on the era with Professor Robert Cohen of New York University. The investigation into the accident is still underway, it's unclear if the driver will be charged.

I did history as an undergrad -- never took a class from Zelnick, but the name's familiar. Damn.]

Wow, the Attack of the Marauding [FedEx|Airborne|UPS|DHL|USPS] truck.

Around here they're pretty sane and most people actually stop and wait for you to cross the street. But that's just here while I'm on the medschool campus. In the rest of the area they will just run you right over.

Well, in this case, it was an Alhambra Water truck, but yeah.

Ugh.
