first, I filed my final project proposal today. Much to my suprise, Professor Larson is going to be my advisor, and I'm ending up with five units for this crazy task.

I started a blog for noting what I'm up to in regards to my project. I'll be updating it slightly later with this news, but if you're so inclined to follow along (and I could probably use help), you can follow along at either http://www.retstak.org/project/ or right here on LJ as [livejournal.com profile] neighbors.

The syn feed name makes more sense if you know what I'm up to, and that is simply thus. Sometimes you have to move sight unseen. This makes the odds that you end up in a bad neighborhood more possible. But if there was some way for people to see what a neighborhood is like from the eyes of people who live there, that would be rather useful.

So that's what I'm up to there. I'd be grateful for any help, I'm not much of a programmer, and I've suddenly got a huge web program to code. Oh here we go.

Oh yeah, and it has to be done (it can be in beta, but it has to be at least there) by May 11th.

Here we go.

It's a beautiful day in Berkeley today, I'm sitting on the steps of Dwinnelle, leaching airbears from the building, and just being rather content with life. It's kinda a nice change from the horrible bleakness I was facing last week. Agitated depressions and mixed states look a lot alike, so I'm not exactly sure which it was, but whatever it was, it was not fun.

Then again, I'm probably riding the high of turning in my final project forms.

That's okay with me.

A squirrel nearly sat on my foot. He came right up to it and was sniffing my shoe, and I was a bit worried he was going to hop on my foot (I wear Birkenstocks). The squirrels around Berkeley are fearless.

I love this campus. I love it dearly. But goddamn, I hate SIMS at times. From day one, the bane of my existance has been "SIMS is a professional school." It's frustating, because my interests lie more in the realm of people interacting with technology, and I probably should have applied for the Ph.D program instead of the master's program. Or done history.

But you can't regret now. I'm a semester and a final project away of attaining the highest level of education ever achieved in my family, and I'm not happy. Oh well. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

One more semester. Let's see if I can make it without killing myself.

What is your web language?

Probably either PHP or Perl, depending on a few things. I don't know either that well, so that's one of the things I'll be doing with this project. :)

I like your idea. Go Kate!

My advice is go with PHP! It is much more straightforward than Perl, has less obscurities, arcane formats and "secret knowledge" and such, and is probably gaining on Perl as far as usage. I had to learn PHP last year while on the job, and just by reading the online documentation at PHP.net and reviewing some of the more complicated topics at the PHP Builder community, I was up and running pretty fast.

Thanks! I'm pretty much going from a standing start, I know a little bit but not a lot. This will help much, I'm putting both those in the blog links so that I have access to them. (I think I'll put the MySQL one there too.)

I'm really scared about this project, but I think I might be able to pull it off.

I've just added your project blog to my friends. I'll be happy to help as much as I can. Go you, you can do it.

All campus squirrels are fearless. I think the Sac State squirrels have actually learned to hunt in packs so as to be more indimidating. ;)

Yeah, I was quite surprised. He hesitated when I moved, though. So not quite as fearless as some.

Campus Squirrels are the same over here, the ones at York University would mug the ducks when someone threw bread for them. And if you stopped, they'd try and mug you for it!

I think it's because they reguard students as a lower life form! [kinda like university administators do.] ;)
