There's bad news in the offing with a sick kitty, but I'll write more about it later. In the chaos that was this week, I completely lost track of an assignment due tomorrow.

So, if y'all wouldn't mind leaving me your comments on cereal boxes, or anything you use to hold cereal, let me know. 'Cause I have to ask. :) (Yeah, my group project is to build a better mousetrap a new paradigm for the humble cereal box.)

The cereal box is an example of warehoused inventory. A modern system would have JIT delivery of each bite (suitably soaked in milk) to your spoon. :)

I prefer the current idea of the bagged cereal (no box), used with the tupperware-styled 'cereal container'. Open the bag, pour in the cereal. Cereal is cheaper, lasts longer, and it's easy to see how much you have left.

Is this meant to be something that cereal is sold in, something that it's stored in at home, or both?

If the first, the box is ideal: easy to stack, easy to store, cheap and easy to manufacture, and opaque so that people have to rely on the pretty pictures on the outside.

If the third, it should be transparent (or translucent) and reclosable, have a pour spout that's neither too big nor too small, fit on a standard shelf, not break if you drop it, have a place to write and rewrite the expiration date, and be airtight when you close it and otherwise prevent spoilage.

A reasonable blend would keep the airtight reclosability and built-in pour spout of the home model (think like the metal spouts on salt canisters, only bigger), and the easy construction, size, and opacity of the store model.

Easy to open bag that opens just the right amount to pour cereal (wide enough so it doesn't bottleneck, narrow enough so it doesn't pour out uncontrollably). Rose's pour-spout idea would work here, too.

The bag should also be easy to reseal tightly.

If there's a toy inside, it should be at the top of the box (or outside the bag) so that you don't get kids digging their grubby hands through the cereal trying to get it out.

My favorite cereal comes in a square shaped paper bag. The bag is easy to stack because of its shape, the top makes it easy to pour (because you can fold/smooch the paper from a square into a triangle to adjust cereal flow-if that makes sense), the top part is easy to fold back down (although making it resealable would be good), and the bag itself is compostable. And its made in Sweden, so the engineering has to be good.

What I would like to see is some way not to leave so much milk in the bottom of the bowl. Perhaps a bowl built on a slant?

The first thing is, resealable bags. I mean, even the kitty litter I buy comes in resealable bags now. Cheese comes in resealable pouches. And if there ever was anything that needed to stay undamp and crisp, it's dry cereal.

I like the idea of a pour spout, though I think it may only be valid for small shapes/sizes, like Grapenuts(r). I've used containers with holes in the top for cereal, and even things as small as Cheerios(r) can form amazing structures and get stuck.

Any kind of container that's bag-shaped is going to have to pass the knock-over test--namely, is it at least as steady as a box? Also, I am dubious about making them transparent or translucent. We keep our cereals out on a shelf, and they take some sun during the day; if you had something like a granola or Sugar Crisp(r) in a transparent/translucent container, I could see things getting hot and sticky in there.

I can see something like those pouches peanuts are sold in, though, with the narrow tops and mandorla-shaped bases. And you could sell them on hanging displays instead of shelving, which might appeal. And if the plastic was strong enough, you might be able to open the top and use the bag as the bowl, much better for single servings than those little cardboard boxes with the perforations and the waxed paper linings.

Actually, I think that may be your product. Single-servings (1 cup or more, what people really eat) in plastic pouches that can serve as the bowl--maybe with a plastic spoon glued on, sold in displays about single servings of hyper-pasteurized milk boxes, both cow and soy...

And why am I not talking about recycling? Because the boxes now are filled with plastic bags--a more advanced bag will not be that much worse.
