bored, and trying something found on LJ-nifty...

katster

katrina

...interesting. why is font color="katster" coming out black and font color=katrina coming out blue?

even more interesting, in Aieeee, "katster" comes out more red. This really surprises me. I would have expected it to be switched.

It's because only certain alpha-numeric characters are going to come through as valid Hex values (which is what color codes are done in), and the client (NS, IE, whatever) is always going to try to parse the tag as something viable in relation to placing and order of the characters. If it can't find an exact match, it tries to get as close as possible.

Same reason why when you type "BARNEY" as a color in (at least older versions of) NS you get purple. My understanding is though that not all clients are going to handle the "fuzzy logic" of guessing it, if you will, the same. Lord knows if LJ is bound only by how the client parses the tags or if it has other exceptions...

At least, that's what I think this was about, right?.... If not just shoot me and tell me to quiet down... :-p
