What. A. Game!

from IRC:

[16:01] katster :22. Oregon is first and goal on the five.
[16:04] katster fumble in the endzone, ruling is *touchback*, under review.
[16:04] katster if it stands, Cal wins.
[16:07] katster if you recall that late hit in the first half? Same defensive guy stripped it.
[16:07] * DreFK is now known as Dreol
[16:07] katster RULING STANDS!
[16:07] LonEagle yay power plants
[16:07] katster CAL WINS! CAL WINS!

I don't believe I've ever shed tears at a Cal victory before. An Oregon receiver caught the ball, made a move towards the endzone, and fumbled the ball into the endzone. And in one moment, we win from Oregon forcing OT with a touchdown to a Cal victory.

We won. And with Oklahoma and West Virginia going back, I suspect we'll be at #4, with a game between #2 and #3 next week.

But we won. We took a hard game, and persevered. We won for the first time in twenty years at Autzen.

We won.

Football, right? And not the kind with the white and black ball?

Congratulations..I haven't been paying much attention to college football due to a) the horror of ND's season and b) the Cubs, so I'm glad Cal is doing this well.

Update. West Virginia, Oklahoma and Florida ALL lost. Of the top six teams in the nation, three of them were upset today(or yesterday) in games they really should not have lost. I would expect Texas to leapfrog Cal again, because Mack Strong is more lobbyist than head coach, but Texas took a fall too. So the only thing between Cal and the number three spot is a really good showing by Ohio State. Oh no. They played a patsy this week. So they can't really have a good showing. Looks like Cal for #3!

The best part about this? Of the top three teams in the nation, 1 and 3 are Pac-10. How many other teams are ranked? 2 others, Oregon will move down, probably to about 16, and ASU will hold steady for beating on a patsy. That's a darn good showing for the Pac-10. And I'm not ruling out UCLA's return to the top 25 with a 40-14 pasting of OSU.

So, yeah. Football, college football, Pac-10 football, and Cal football. Things I love to talk about.

Just making an addendum. The SEC will probably still have 5 teams in the top 25. FSU lost at Clemson so they might squeak into the top 25 with a 4-1 record with all the SEC love floating around out there. Still. Pac-10 is universally recognized as at least the #2 conference in the nation. West coast football rules!

Careful. Kat has a Gopher fan on her f-list. The Gophers are not patsies--anything can happen in Big10 football. I expected OSU to win; however, the Gophers still played a really good game. And, they were not shutout like last year's game.

I apologize. I refer not to their actual status as a team, but to the impressions under-informed Associated Press, that look at a 1-4 record and see nothing other than the numbers. It wasn't that long ago that Cal was a 1-10 patsy. The same team that went 1-10 went 7-6 the next year without any truly significant roster changes. Just a new coach.

So patsy is a relative term. Please accept my apologies for using it lightly.

Congratulations!

I was tailgating with a Cal fan this evening--he was plugged into his radio/headphones so as not to miss the game.
