We're sitting down to dinner tonight when the doorbell rings. It's the neighbor boy, the son of the painters, telling us about a kitten wandering around meowing its heart out. He thinks it's in our backyard. So Jill goes out back with the neighbor boy to go searching for it, and I go out front, where Britney is chilling. The painter's dog came running over to play with Britney, and it's no big deal.

Until I hear a sad pitiful meow over at the Russian's house. I look over and there's a kitten over there. He starts walking across the street, and I yell for Jill and the painter's son to get out here right now, while trying to keep control of two dogs that have suddenly gotten very interested in this small furry critter.

The dogs end up chasing the kitten underneath Mom's car, where it vanishes. The painter calls his dog home and we shove Britney in the house and try to figure out where the kitten is. Finally, Jill fetches a flashlight, letting Britney out in the process. I was wondering if the kitten had climbed up in one of the wheelwells, and watching Brit intently sniff a wheel, I think I have a pretty good guess.

Unfortunately, we didn't think to put Brit in the house before extracting kitten, nor did Jill remember my little run-in with Mama Cat back in 2000 and put on gloves to try to corral him. She got bit for her troubles. She managed to get him, though, and we put him in a box to keep him corralled until we could figure out what to do with him. Turns out, the painter's son, the one that brought it to our attention in the first place, wants to keep him.

It turns out, the little guy is skinny. So skinny you can pretty much count every rib and his pelvic bones stick out of his rear, and he's got fleas and probably ear mites. Poor little guy.

Since he's bit Jill, we have to keep an eye on him for a bit to make sure that he doesn't have rabies, but I don't really think that's a problem. And now that he's no longer being chased by dogs, he's the most loving critter you ever did meet -- purring loudly, loving to have anything to do with people, and is settling in nicely.

(He's in the bathroom mainly because it's a small room we can confine him to which we can also keep the dog out of. The dog has taken to guarding the bathroom door, though. And yes, that's me, holding the little guy.)

What a sweetie! Something to bear in mind, fleas jump... and breed... quickly. So you should probably keep her seperate from the rest of the pets. Also, if she's in that kind of shape and covered in fleas and ear mites, you really should keep an eye out for deer ticks as well. Are you guys gonna keep/name her?

I made myself laugh at myself. I am really tired, so I read "telling us about a kitten wandering around meowing its heart out." ...My brain told me that kitten = kitchen. Kitchens can not only wander, but now they can meow? What is this world coming to?

The baby's in quarantine in the first place because Jill got bit. Quarantine is occurring in the bathroom, which is the smallest room in the house we can host him with a door closed.

(It's a little boy, we've already been able to tell that much.)

The cat and the dog that legitimately reside here have flea medicine that we apply on a regular basis. I used to be horribly allergic to fleas. (Maybe I'm not so allergic, now, I've been handling this little guy and only have one bite...which very well might be from the fact I was running around outside at dusk -- prime mosquito time.) Thus, while fleas breed, and I understand that, at least the cat and dog are protected.

I'll check him for ticks, though. They're not as big of a problem as fleas out here, but they do exist, and it's probably not a bad idea.

The boy across the street wants him and has already named him Doodle. (He's got another cat and a dog. The dog is Yankee and the other cat has gone through several name changes, but appears to be Dandy/Dance now.)

And yeah, gotta watch those sad wandering kitchens. ;)

I hear ya on the flea allergy. We're currently trying to get the fleas gone. It's been an especially bad summer when it comes to them. I think we've killed most of the them,. but when they were alive and biting, my feet to my knees were COVERED in huge, itchy, pink welts. I was dosing Benadryl (Well, the cheap store brand) like it was candy! And I was also using Benadryl creme, even though the instructions on both said not to use with another blah blah blah. I ignore warnings! ^_^ (Hey, it couldn't have been that dangerous. I'm still alive and we... alive. ^_^;)
