*does the student loan consolidation process tango*

This is ...argh. Crazy.

Really not sure I want to go with the people who coldcalled me out of the blue last week anymore. OTOH, not sure I want to do this whole consolidation tango at all, but I need to, because the damned rates are going up.

yay.

I wouldn't go with anyone who coldcalls. In fact, anyone who does that loses the sale. If it's a politician doing a poll I tell them I'm voting for their opponent. When they ask why I say “because you just barged into my personal life without being invited, and regardless of whether the no-call list applies to you, I expect my desire to not be bothered to be respected” and hang up.

Who are the people who cold called you? I went with someone who just happened to send me the first notice in the mail. I didn't realize that I'd be getting these notices 8 times a year or more for the rest of my loan's life. But I called them and got it consolidated and on the graduated repayment system. 5 years of interest only and then 10 years of a higher payment (because by this time you should be making more money, right?)

So now here I am, one month before the 5 year payback mark, paying off my car early so I can afford the jump in monthly payments from $93.36 a month to $275 a month.

Wheeee! *real life smacks you in the face*

Oh yeah - I ended up with Citibank. (That's who the original people sold it to. That's probably what will happen, the people who call you sell it right after they get it.)

I haven't had experience with it myself, but I'm told that consolidation can be a bad thing -- it means that you can't go through the process (the name of which I don't remember) whereby the government will say you don't have to pay for a while because you're too poor.

I have no idea what's best for you, but I figured you deserved that piece of almost-information while you're making your decision. I hope it goes well for you, seriously.
