Every once in a while, things smack me in the head. Today, I logged in on my unix shell, where I have fortune set to run. Here's what popped up on screen:

Ships are safe in harbor, but they were never meant to stay there.

Sometimes the universe smacks me in the face. I get the message. Now I really ought to do things that lead to Sacramento and job and self-suffiency.

My theory is that the universe is smacking us in the face all the time. Mostly, we don't notice. Some principle of physics may be involved here...
