What's the word on your mom?

And now for something completely different.

You don't know me, [livejournal.com profile] rosefox sent me over...I'm tenuously in correspondence over her music-mix challenge, and she said you wanted to play, but were having a bit of a time coming up with ideas?

Mebbe I can help.

01) A cover-song that crosses genres = Well, there's "Heroes" by Celtic Frost, originally covered by David Bowie--I haven't heard it, but Celtic Frost is a pretty metal band...
02) A gender-bending song = either "Lola" by the Kinks or "Queer" by Garbage would make my list, but I'm also holding out love for David Bowie's "John, I'm Only Dancing", even though it's not gender-bending, per se
03) A political or cultural satire = my new favorite--Leslie Fish, "Gamers", and I have the .mp3
04) A song that includes at least one significant change in tone, tempo, or mood = This one's gonna be hard. Though the one that's springing instantly to mind is "The Rhythm and the Heat", by Peter Gabriel. Starts out on the slow side, and then the drums take over. It's fabulous.
05) A song about someone dead = "Timothy", by the Buoys is my favorite, but there's also "I Used to Love Her But I Had to Kill Her" by Guns n' Roses
06) A song about sex = Well, we can go with sexual attraction, and I can go back to that Bowie fave, "John, I'm Only Dancing"; we can go directly into frank sex, and you could pick any of the songs on this list (http://www.audiogalaxy.com/articles?&a=237) that you can find; or we can go with personal preference. Mine's always "Closer" by NIN (that's a no-brainer for me) or "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" by the Revolting Cocks. Or, for funny, we can take Bloodhound Gang's "Bad Touch".
07) A song that, when listened to while driving either makes you sing along, or want to drive very fast = "Allstar" by Smashmouth, or Fear's "Let's Have a War" are mine.
08) A song whose instrumentation includes an accordion = Well, if we're avoiding the obvious, what about "Michael Nesmith" or "Tom Waits for No One" by Stuart McNair?
09) A song that has the same title as another, more popular song = Depends on how you look at the more popular song, but "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" by The Temptations was the original; later, "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" was recorded by TLC. In the same vein, "Be Prepared" was recorded by both Elton John and Tom Lehrer, but they're RADICALLY different versions

I'm going to split this in half...

The Larch (otherwise known as part II).

Continuing...

10) A song originally in one language but translated and performed in another = the classic here is the Beatles' "Ich Liebe Dich", which is on their Rarities album
11) A song that uses more than one nonsense word = Well, again we can go classic, and pull out the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus", but there's also "Wango Tango" by Ted Nugent, for an *entirely* different feel, "Witchi Tai To" by Everything is Everything, or "I Zimbra" by the Talking Heads.
12) A song that has the word "cheese" in the title or lyrics = Hmm, that's going to be rough. Off the top of my head I can think of Richard Cheese, the String Cheese Incident and Big Naked Cheese, but those are all recording artists. Titles or lyrics...well, there are the Fast Food Rockers, who recorded "Smile (Say Cheese)"; the Rainmakers, "Government Cheese"; and hey, there's also Nerf Herder, "American Cheese", now that I think about it.
13) A song having to do with an animal or creature of some sort = "Bad Touch" by the Bloodhound Gang would also fit here, as well as "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem, or to go in an entirely different direction, "Grandma's Feather Bed" by John Denver
14) A song for which all the words in the artist's name and in the title start with the same letter = The ultimate here is "They Might Be Giants" by They Might Be Giants...I don't think that can be topped. It's off their "Flood" album.
15) A song with a day of the week in the title = "Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones springs instantly to mind
16) A song with a color in the title = There's "Black and White" by Three Dog Night, and the very schmaltzy "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" by Vic Dana. There's "Blue Jean" by David Bowie. REM did "Orange Crush". Dido just released "White Flag". Let's see...Joan Jett and the Blackhearts did the cover of "Crimson and Clover", and Peter Gabriel did "Red Rain", and Soundgarden did "Black Hole Sun"...gods, we could come up with a compilation entirely out of color songs...
17) A song from a movie (as differentiated from a soundtrack: one where the performance of the song actually occurs in the movie) = Maybe I'm unclear on the concept--I think "My Immortal" by Evanescence added perfectly to the scene in "Daredevil" where both of them are preparing to fight. On the other hand, we could always take the Indigo Girls performing "Power of Two" in "Boys on the Side"--because during the film, they're actually seen on stage, singing and playing it.
18) A song that is a cover of a song in a movie or play = I don't know if Murray Head's "One Night In Bangkok" counts, because he was in the touring company for a bit before he left and recorded the album...but it was from the musical "Chess" originally. I can't think of any others.

You may have gathered from this list that I'm HIGHLY eclectic in my music. I am. And I'm more than willing to run research for you if you have other ideas. S'just that [livejournal.com profile] rosefox mentioned you were tapping on ideas. Me, I've GOT ideas, but not the tech to burn. Therefore. :) Get back to me if it sounds like a good idea. Hope your day/week/month/life improves.
