cat spit up...

Anybody out there know what it means if a cat is spitting up on a regular basis? And I do mean spitting up, the fluid that comes up is very clear, and there's little to no food in it. The cat is 15, and she's otherwise eating okay.

I would recommend a trip to a vet soon. Before then, give the cat a big dose of hairball remedy, it could just be a particularly big hairball that the cat is struggling to pass. (I have heard of hairballs so big they COULDN'T be passed, so I'd still take the cat to the vet.) With a cat that age, it could be anything from a tumor to the hairball, so better safe than sorry.

Sometimes cats can have infections that make them throw up like that. Your vet may be able to give her an antibiotic that will get rid of it.

If a cat throws up a lot, especially if it is mostly gastric fluid, it can hurt her gums and possibly cause her to lose teeth, which might not be noticed right away, so taking her to the vet soon is a good idea.

i agree with gypsyjen, it could be a hairball. but cats also do that when they've gotten into poisonous substances, when they've got a cold or virus. it also might be something caught in her throat that she's trying to lodge loose enough to either swallow or spit up. if she's eating ok, i'd lean more towards the hairball or lodged thing theory. if she's not able to keep any food down though, i'd call the vet and take her in asap simply because she is so old. one thing to watch for is her *not* eating. that could be a sign of something serious. and as horrible as it is to hear, sometimes they stop eating because they're headed for the great scratching post in the sky.
