Pamela Samuelson; Boalt Hall School of Law

Pamela Samuelson is a genius. No, really. In 1997, the Internet guru and Boalt Hall School of Law professor was one of 23 winners of a $295,000 "genius grant" from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

This no-strings grant allows recipients to use the money as they like, whether it's to advance their expertise on a particular subject, delve into a new area of study, or change careers. Samuelson has so far opted to put much of that money back into research, hiring assistants to help with ongoing projects.

While the award certainly garnered her attention, it didn't take a genius grant to establish Samuelson's place among the nation's top academics in intellectual property law.

...and she's a joint professor at SIMS, which is my school, and thus I get to take her Intellectual Property class, which is half the reason I wanted to go to Cal in the first place!

Robert J. Sawyer completely rocks as a science fiction author.

Patrick, around Christmastime, in response to a phone conversation about the nature of spirituality and religion and God, had shipped out his copy of Calculating God, which I read and was utterly amazed. I hold the belief that science and religion are not incompatable, and that book gave me a lot to think about.

So, the other day, I picked up Factoring Humanity. And *wow*. It's given me more to think about and try to piece into my belief system. So yeah, it was definitely worth the three hours that I read it in, and it's a completely amazing and awesome book. Sawyer really knows how to write a good yarn.

And yes, Patrick, I'm returning the favour, and this book is getting shipped to Halifax as soon as I get a chance to do so. You need to read it, it'll fit right in line with some things we've talked about.

And so now I will try to shut down my awed and amazed brain long enough to get some sleep. Because I am *really* off phase now.

It's a beautiful morning...

Decided to take Brit out to go potty before I went to bed. I'm not normally awake for sunrises, but this morning I was. The sky is this beautiful shade of pastel blue, and the leftover remnants of clouds from the rain we had passing through yesterday are tinged with pink. The fog was coming out of the ground as it's wont to do in these parts (this is where the dread tule fogs come from), because of all the moisture in the soil. It's cold out, but not cold enough to warrant a jacket (and I stood out there for ten minutes in bare feet). It's about maybe 40 F (~5C, for those who aren't the americans). And it's gorgeous. I loved watching Britney make tracks through the dew.

Spring is most definitely in the air, I could feel my spirits being lifted just by standing out there.

Anyway, my alarm is set for twelve thirty, and I'm *really* headed off to bed now. I promise. Just wanted to share.

This is just something that is just utterly cool, and I wanted to share. It's something that I try to live by as best I can, and it's a decent summary. I want to add it to the treasure chest of spiritual things I want to think about.
